Something touches my hair.
I almost flinch, but the being’s power takes control of my body, holding me steady.
My heart beating, I turn to find a shadow fiddling with my hair, plaiting it with surprising gentleness into a large braid. She looks like a child, with a single eye on her mask painted like an aqua and lime-green flower.
I don’t know whether it’s the feathered being’s force, or the girl’s playful smile, but somehow I don’t want to run or chase her away.
She finishes, laughing as she runs back into the accumulation of dust. I stand there for a moment. Something within me wants to thank her or wave goodbye.
