The scorched tree gives way beneath me, but I don’t fall. “I accept your answer. You worry me a little, but maybe that should not surprise me, considering your kind.” My body relaxes, the pain fading. I’d feel proud of myself, but right now, I want to close my eyes and pretend none of this happened. |

“I wish you luck on your journey, and may Entropy treat you well.” Duality tilts me off her tail, letting me go. The nebulae disappear upwards, fading into a hole in the golden sky. My limb body sinks through cream-coloured clouds, being covered in soft peachy powder. I can barely feel myself falling. The warm air and colours make it harder to stay conscious. I want to ask myself, ‘would closing my eyes let me wake up, back with my parents? Or back in the apple orchard, slumped under a tree?’ But I have a feeling I know what the answer is. ‘And you would be correct.’ I let myself drift into unconsciousness. |
